The geography of dams in Algeria is one of the vital fields directly linked to water resources management and the assurance of water security amid climatic and environmental challenges. Dams are distributed across the major river basins, such as the Cheliff Basin, the Seybouse Basin, and the Soummam Basin, in a manner consistent with the geographic and climatic variability of these regions. These dams play a fundamental role in water storage, regulating surface flows, providing freshwater and irrigation, and protecting lowland areas from floods. As for the environmental determinants of alternative geography, they arise from the need to understand spatial contexts and to reconsider assumptions regarding dam locations or to introduce alternatives to them. This includes ecological transformations resulting from dam construction that affect ecosystems, as well as sustainability experiences across geographic areas aimed at addressing population pressure on water resources due to urban and agricultural expansion, in addition to climate change, which reduces precipitation amounts and increases evaporation rates and soil erosion. In this context, alternative geography emerges as a strategic approach and orientation that focuses on exploiting alternatives to traditional dams, such as water harvesting, groundwater storage processes, and desalination plants, in order to reduce reliance on surface dam impoundment. This approach aims to achieve a balance between the requirements of economic development and environmental protection, while enhancing water governance and sustainability in the face of future challenges. | en_US |
